今回のお勉強トピックは時事ネタから、台風・ハリケーン・サイクロンの違いについてお勉強していきます。
2019年9月現在、アメリカの東海岸に強烈なハリケーンが発生し、甚大な被害が発生しているとニュースサイトで報道されています。
このニュースを見ていたとき、ふいに「台風とハリケーンとサイクロンって何が違うんだろう」と疑問に思いました。
このエントリではそれぞれの違いをまとめて、それぞれが英語でどのように表現されるものなのか調べていきます。

台風とハリケーンとサイクロンの違い
これはチャチャっとググって調べてしまいましょう。
NOTE：Typhoon,Hurricane,Cycloneの違い
・広義では全て熱帯低気圧を指す言葉
・それぞれの名称に該当する自然現象も同じもの
・違いは、その熱帯低気圧が位置する場所
Tyhoon ：太平洋北西部、東南アジア地域
Hurricane：大西洋北部・太平洋北東部・アメリカ付近
Cyclone ：インド洋
・広義では全て熱帯低気圧を指す言葉
・それぞれの名称に該当する自然現象も同じもの
・違いは、その熱帯低気圧が位置する場所

へー、これは知らんかった。全部同じ自然現象を指す言葉だったんですね。日本人に馴染み深い単語を使うと、全部台風ってこと。
面白いなと思ったのはノートに書いている、「熱帯低気圧が位置する場所」によって名称が変わるってところ。発生した場所じゃないんですね。たとえばアメリカの太平洋近くで発生したら、それはハリケーンなんです。しかし太平洋をウロチョロしてるうちに太平洋北西部(日本あたり)まで近づくと、それはハリケーンではなく台風という名称に変化します。これは越境台風と呼ばれるものみたいです。
また狭義としては、それぞれ細かい違いがあるようなんですが、ここではそこまで追いかけません。
ちなみに英語圏でも「何が違うの？」という疑問が上がるらしく、BBCのWebサイトで違いが説明されていました。
All tropical storms
They are all the same thing: tropical storms. But they are known by different names in different locations.
In the North Atlantic Ocean and Northeast Pacific, they are called hurricanes. But if the same type of disturbance takes place in the Northwest Pacific Ocean, it is known as a typhoon. And in the South Pacific and Indian Ocean, cyclone is the correct term.

Merriam-Websterは”occur”という単語を使っていますね。厳密にいえば(解釈の違いもあるのかもしれませんが)発生した場所は関係ないので正しくないです。
Cambridgeは"found"、Oxfordは”in the region”と説明しているので正しいと思います。
もしWhat is Typhoon?と聞かれたら、一番シンプルでわかりやすいのはOxfordの説明ですかね。（そんなことを聞かれるとは思えないですけど）

流石にアメリカ英語の辞書であるMerriam-Websterは詳しい。ここでも"occur"という単語が使われていますが、説明範囲としては他の辞書と比較してクォリティが高い気がします。
Cambridgeは前節のTyphoonと同様の説明をしていて一貫性があります。CambridgeでTyphoonとHurricaneを辞書で引けば「あぁ場所が違うのね」と理解できる作りになっている。
Oxfordもシンプルだけど、Typhoonの説明では”A tropical storm”と書いていたものが、このHurricaneの説明では”A storm with a violent wind”に変わっています。ぼくみたいな重箱の隅をつつくことを趣味にしている人間からすると、「tropical(熱帯性)かどうかも関係があるのか？」と訝ってしまうため、ちょっとわかりづらい。説明はわかりやすいけど。

このCycloneはいずれの辞書でも地理的な特徴が書かれていないですね。TyphoonやHurricaneを一般化した低気圧(熱帯性)の嵐という意味で書かれています。
